Published by the Center for Working Life, Starting Over helps workers and their families understand and deal with the stress and frustration of starting over. Full of valuable insights, helpful job search tips and sound advice, Starting Over makes it easier for laid-off workers to move through the change process to new jobs or retraining. CWL developed Starting Over as an outreach tool for laid-off workers services and for use in pre- and post-layoff peer support programs. More than 1 million copies have been distributed to workers in the United States and Central Europe and is a useful tool for WIB staff, One Stop Centers, Labor Management Assistance Teams and unions in their work with laid-off workers.


Starting Over is worker friendly, written in a style that's easy to read and understand. CWL publishes Starting Over in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Russian.

The Center has also written a manual for training union leaders and service providers dealing with dislocated workers and their families. Serving Workers In Transition: Using Peer Support in Dislocated Worker Programs, was produced for the Human Resources Development Institute (HRDI) of the AFL-CIO.

In the Center manual A Union Approach to Workplace Education, published by the
Labor Education Research Center of the University of Oregon, CWL has laid out
the principles for creating an effective worker-centered education program.
